To help covered members to cope with the challenges of seeking disability pension benefits, the SSEU Local 371 Legal Services Fund provides a disability legal services program through a panel law firm.

What is the Benefit

When a city employee becomes disabled, they must navigate a difficult and frustrating legal process that involves proving their disability before various administrative agencies, including the New York City Employees’ Retirement System (“NYCERS”), the Social Security Administration and the Workers’ Compensation Board.

Under this program, attorneys from a panel law firm are available to represent covered members in NYCERS disability pension cases for a reduced fee of $750.  The Fund will pay $500 of the fee, leaving the member responsible for a $250 co-payment. (Note: if you have retained a different law firm to represent you in a related worker’s compensation case, the panel law firm would charge you its standard fee of $3,000 for representation before NYCERS).
